일각에서는 당초 선거법 위반이 주요 혐의로 알려졌던 임종식 교육감이 뇌물수수 혐의로 구속영장을 청구받게 된 배경에 그의 최측근인 A씨가 있다는 설이 제기되고 있다.

실제로, 경찰은 최근 A씨의 아내가 고가의 차량을 현금 거래하는 정황을 포착했고 이에 따라 A씨의 자택을 압수수색하여 수 억 원의 현금 다발을 발견, 이 자금의 출처를 조사하는 과정에서 임종식 경북도교육감과의 연관 고리가 밝혀진 것으로 추정되고 있다. 다만, 검찰은 이와 관련해 구체적 사안은 밝히지 않고 있다.

이에 대하여 임종식 교육감과 연락을 시도했지만, 연락이 닿지 않았다. 

한편, 임 교육감에 대한 구속영장 실질 심사 기일은 오는 22일 오전 11시 포항지원 2호 법정에서 열릴 예정이다.
