윤석열 정부는 국정과제로‘국가교육책임제 강화로 교육격차 해소’를 추진하고 있으며 교육부는 지속적으로 증가하는 다문화·탈북학생의 교육 지원을 강화하기 위해 2023년 10월에 ‘이주배경학생 인재양성 지원 방안’을 발표했다.

이에 재단은 다문화․탈북학생과 대학(원)생 간 매칭을 통해 다문화․탈북학생의 학교생활 적응 및 기초학습을 지원하고, 대학(원)생에게는 장학금을 지원하는 2024년 다문화·탈북학생 멘토링장학금 사업을 전폭적으로 확대 및 개편했다.

2024년 다문화․탈북학생 멘토링장학금 사업 계획에서는 지원 예산을 156억 원으로 대폭 확대하고, 더 많은 다문화․탈북학생이 멘토링 지원을 받을 수 있도록 전체 멘토링 활동 가능시간을 104만 시간으로 전년 대비 두 배 규모로 확대한다.

이와 함께 멘토 참여를 활성화하기 위해 올해 사업계획에는 멘토링장학금의 시급 단가를 도시 지역은 14,000원, 농어촌(읍·면) 지역은 18,000원으로 전년 대비 각각 12%(도시), 20%(농어촌) 인상하고 지원 필수 요건(교수 추천서를 필수에서 대학 선택으로 변경)을 완화하였으며, 사업을 1개월 정도 조기 시행했다.
