6.1 대구시장 선거가 시궁창 선거로 전락하고 있다는 지적들이 쏟아지고 있다. 

대선에 나섰던 주자가 갑자기 방향을 턴하여 자신을 도운 지인의 자리를 꿰차는가 하면, 당 운영과 새 정부 구정의 원활한 운영을 지원해야 할 당사자는 물론, 최근 사면 받아 자유의 몸이 된 박근혜 전 대통령을 지근에서 보필해 온 한 변호사는 반 전 대통령의 배경을 등에 업고 출마하겠다고 나섰다.

이름하여 대선 주자 홍준표, 국민의힘 최고위원 김재원, 박 전 대통령 변호사 유영하 등이 당사자들이다. 

정치인들이 최고로 따지는 것 중에 하나가 명분임을 감안하면 이들 세사람 모두 명분이 부족하거나 아예 명분을 거론할 자격도 없다는 게 지역 정가의 전언이다.

그런데도 이들의 강력한 출마의사를 달리 꺽을 방법은 현재로서는 전무하다. 

이렇듯 명분도 부족한 상황에서 인기에 영합해 출마를 강행하다보니 대구시의 미래를 걱정하는 이들의 입에서는 하루가 멀다 하고 한숨이 새어 나온다. 대구시의 미래를 한낱 정치인들의 인기 경합장으로 변질될 것에 대한 걱정을 해야 한다는 자성 섞인 목소리도 나온다.

당연히 부족한 명분에도 초점이 맞춰지고 있다. 정치란 무릇 예측 가능해야 한다. 하물며 정치&해정의 조합은 오죽 더 하겠느냐는 것. 세 사람의 행보는 도저히 앞 가늠을 할 수가 없다는 지적이다.  

그러다보니 이곳저곳에서 아우성이다. 어떤 이는 ‘대구의 미래가 사라지고 있다’고 한다. 또 어떤 이는 이들을 부추기는 지역의 토호 세력과 기득권층 인물에 주목하며 이들의 퇴진을 요구하고 있다. 홍준표 의원을 부추겼다고 알려지고 있는 모 전 대구시장이 최근 들어 지탄의 대상이 되는 것은 이 때문이다

비단 보수층의 걱정만이 아니다. 홍의락 전 국회의원은 자신의 SNS에 이들 세 사람을 겨냥해  "대구 정치판은 가히 시궁창이 되어가고 있다"며 이들을 싸잡아 비판했다. 

그는 또 "총선 때 홍준표는 두더지처럼 기어들어 오더니, 김재원은 날파리처럼 날아들어 온다. 대선 때는 이재명이 박창달을 밀어 넣더니 급기야 박근혜도 유영하를 밀어 넣는다"며 직격했다. 

그러면서 대구시민을 향해 "정신 차려야 한다. 비록 발은 시궁창을 딛고 있어도 부디 높은 이상을 가져야 한다"며 "역사를 보면 대구경북(TK)의 DNA는 혁신입니다. 대구가 정체성을 찾지 못하면 대한민국의 미래는 없다"고 대구시민의 혁신을 주문했다. 

홍 전 의원의 풍자에 일부 대구시민들은 속 시원하다는 평까지 내놓았다. 당을 떠나 대구시민 스스로가 미래 개척에 대한 의지가 없다면 그야말로 ‘대구의 내일은 희망이 없다’는 자성섞인 목소리가 나오는 이유다.
