9일 오전 10시 30분에 포항시청 브리핑룸에서 정책공약발표를 위해 기자회견을 개최한 임준희 경북교육감 예비후보는 마숙자 예비후보와 구체적인 단일화 방법을 두고 최종 합의에 이르지 못하였음을 밝혔다.
임준희 예비후보는 “지난 4월 단일화에 관한 총론에 합의했지만 구체적인 방식에 대해 최종 합의점을 찾지 못했다.”면서 “여론조사에 의한 후보 단일화는 여론조사에 소요되는 절대적 시간을 감안할 때 사실상 불가능한 상황이기 때문에 3자 구도로 간다.”고 설명했다.
앞서 마숙자 예비후보 측은 여론조사에 의한 단순 경쟁방식을 통해 후보를 선정하자고 주장하였으나 임준희 예비후보 측은 본선 경쟁력이 있는 사람이 최종 후보가 돼야 한다는 원칙을 주장하며 단일화에 난항을 겪어온 것으로 전해진다.
