개령초등학교는 자유학구제 시행으로 인해 구도심 및 혁신도시에서 유입되는 학생이 매년 늘어나고 있는데, 남는 교실이 없어서 기존 교실을 쪼개 학생들을 가르치고 있는 열악한 실정이다.

 이에, 송언석 의원은 이와 같은 상황을 교육부에 적극 설명하여 개령초등학교의 특별교실 증축을 위한 사업예산 7억4,600만원을 특별교부세로 확보했다.

또 개령중학교, 금릉초등학교, 구성초등학교에 신설된 특수학급 학생들의 편의 증진을 위한 장애인승강기 설치 예산을 각 학교별로 1억 9,600만원씩 확보했다. 

김천동신초등학교의 경우 2002년 개교 당시 설치된 노후 단창으로 우천 시 빗물이 안으로 유입되거나 동절기 단열이 잘 되지 않는 문제를 해결하기 위해 창호를 이중창으로 개체하기 위한 사업예산 6억 8,400만원을 확보했다.

 송언석 의원은 “이번 특별교부금 확보로 김천지역 학생들이 더욱 쾌적하고 안전한 교육환경에서 공부할 수 있게 되었다”라며 “앞으로도 교육현장의 목소리에 더욱 귀 기울이고, 김천시 초중고 학생들의 교육환경을 개선하기 위해 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.
