두 단체는 "현장의 현실과 전문성을 무시한 발언"이라며 반대 입장을 분명히 했다. 이들은 또 대구시교육청에 교육복지사 인력 감축 정책을 중단하고, 학교 현장 중심의 인력 확대 방안 마련을 촉구했다.

대구시교육청은 곧바로 해명에 나섰다. 교육청 측은 "2026년 3월부터 학생맞춤통합지원 체계를 전면 시행할 예정으로, 이를 위해 교육지원청 학생맞춤통합지원센터를 준비해왔다"며 "올해와 내년에 걸쳐 센터 소속 교육복지사 10명을 증원했다"고 밝혔다. 또 '소멸 직종'이나 '교사 대체 직종'으로 교육복지사를 폄하할 의도는 없다고 해명했다.

하지만 현장은 여전히 냉랭하다. 교육복지사 단체들은 "학교 현장 인력은 자연감소로 줄이고, 교육지원청 센터 인력만 늘려놓은 것을 '증원'이라고 주장하는 것은 현실을 왜곡하는 것"이라고 비판했다. 

실제로 대구 초중학교 내 교육복지사 수는 2013년 174명에서 올해 124명, 내년에는 118명까지 감소할 것으로 예상된다. 10년 사이 30% 넘게 줄어든 셈이다.
