구미시는 2024년 6개 농가, 1.3ha 규모의 시험재배를 통해 하미과 멜론의 지역 적응성을 확인한 뒤, 2025년 총 5억 원의 예산을 투입해 25개 농가가 참여하는 8ha 규모의 시범단지를 조성했다. 차열망과 환기시설, 보온자재 등 재배 기반시설을 지원하고, 무인방제기와 환경측정센서 등 스마트농업 기술을 도입해 고온기 재배의 한계를 보완한 것이 안정적인 대량 생산으로 이어졌다.

단기 성과에 그치지 않기 위한 생산자 조직화도 병행됐다. 구미시는 지난해 2월 ‘하미과 멜론 생산자 연합회’를 출범시키고, 공동 기자재 구매와 품질 기준 마련, 재배 기술 공유 체계를 구축했다. 이어 3월부터 9월까지 농가별 현장 진단과 맞춤형 기술 지도를 실시해 품질 균일화와 경영 안정성을 강화했다.

가공과 유통을 연계한 부가가치 창출 전략 역시 성과를 냈다. 구미시는 2024년 4월 하미과 멜론 생산자단체와 ㈜엘코어코퍼레이션 간 음료 가공 업무협약(MOU)을 체결해 가공품 상용화 기반을 마련했다. 지난해 공동 개발한 하미과 멜론 주스를 시작으로, 올해는 국내외 판로 확대와 제품 다변화를 추진할 예정이다.

유통 부문에서는 지난해 5월 유통전문기업과 출하 계약을 체결해 25개 시범농가가 계약재배를 기반으로 안정적인 판로를 확보했다. 현재 생산 물량의 90%는 농산물 전문유통법인을 통해 판매되고, 나머지 10%는 로컬푸드 매장을 통한 직거래로 소비자와 연결되고 있다.

구미시는 2026년을 브랜드 경쟁력 강화의 전환점으로 삼아 하미과 멜론 재배 확대 보급 시범사업 2년 차를 추진한다. 2억 원 규모의 사업을 통해 재배면적 확대와 현장 정착을 지원하고, 도비를 확보해 ‘농업대전환 특화작목 들녘특구 시범사업’에도 본격 착수할 계획이다.

해당 사업은 2026년부터 2027년까지 2년간 총 10억 원 규모로 추진되며, 하미과 멜론을 전략작목으로 육성하고 수경재배 중심의 표준화된 재배 방식으로 전환하는 데 초점을 맞춘다.

김장호 구미시장은 “하미과 멜론은 구미 농업의 체질을 바꿀 수 있는 잠재력이 큰 품목”이라며 “올해 성과를 발판으로 재배 확대와 기술 지원을 강화해 농가 소득 증대와 지역 경제 활성화로 이어가겠다”고 말했다.

In the distribution sector, a shipment contract was signed with a specialized distribution company in May of last year, securing a stable distribution channel for 25 pilot farms based on contract farming. Currently, 90% of production is sold through specialized agricultural product distribution corporations, and the remaining 10% is directly connected to consumers through local food stores.

Gumi City plans to launch the second year of its Hami melon cultivation and distribution pilot project, marking 2026 as a turning point for strengthening brand competitiveness. The KRW 200 million project will support expansion of cultivation areas and on-site establishment. Provincial funding will also be secured to launch the "Agricultural Transformation Specialized Crops Field Special Zone Pilot Project."

The project, which will run from 2026 to 2027 and will cost a total of KRW 1 billion, will focus on fostering Hami melons as a strategic crop and transitioning to a standardized cultivation method centered on hydroponics.

Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho said, “Hami melons have great potential to change the nature of Gumi agriculture,” and added, “Building on this year’s achievements, we will expand cultivation and strengthen technical support to increase farm income and revitalize the local economy.”
