조합장선거의 후보자로 등록하고자 하는 사람은 해당 조합의 조합원으로서 조합법 및 해당 조합의 정관 등에서 정하는 피선거권 결격사유에 해당하지 않아야 한다. 

후보자등록신청 시에는 법률과 정관에 따른 후보자등록서류와 피선거권에 관한 서류 등을 제출하고 기탁금을 납부하여야 하는데, 기탁금 금액은 5백만 원 이상 1천만 원 이내에서 조합의 정관으로 정한다.

후보자등록신청은 기간 중 매일 오전 9시부터 오후 6시까지로, 22일 등록 마감 후 추첨을 통해 후보자기호가 결정되며 등록을 마친 후보자는 다음 날인 23일부터 3월 7일까지 선거운동을 할 수 있다.
