27일 대구시청 국정감사에 나선 국회 행정안전위원회 소속 감사위원들은 홍준표 전 대구시장의 잘못된 행정을 집중 질타했다. 특히, 이날 여당과 친여 성향 감사위원들은 동대구광장 사용과 광장 내 설치된 박정희 동상 등에 관하여 집중적으로 캐물었다.

이 과정에서 더불어민주당 권칠승 의원은 "제가 쓴 소리 좀 하겠다."며  "대구가 보수 꼴통, 극우의 심장 이런 조롱들이 전국적으로 난무하고 있다." 며 타 지역과 비교하는 발언들을 해 나갔다. 

이에 국민의힘 이달희 의원은 의정 발언을 요청한 뒤 ”동대구역 광장의 사용권과 동상 설치 등에 관하여 민주당 의원들이 말하는 것은 이해는 한다“면서도 ”그러나 조례를 지키지 못한 것과 지역을 빗대서 꼴통 보수 등으로 대구를 폄훼하는 것은 여당답지 않은 질문이다. 시장도 부재한 이곳에 정치중립을 요구받는 공직자들 앞에서 무리한 질의를 이어가고 있다“고 불쾌감을 드러냈다.

이 의원은 그러면서 “절차의 문제 지적은 좋다. 그런 지적은 달게 받고 공직 사회에서 정리해 봐야 할 문제다. 그러나 대구 시민 다수가 갖는 역사적 존경심과 자긍심을 정치적인 잣대로 폄하하고 재단하는 것은 심히 유감스럽다”고 거듭 강조했다. 이 의원은 “(일부 정치 논객들이 0뷰트 등에 나와서 하는 수준의 질의를 국정감사 위원들이 하는 것은) 이는 국회의원의 권리를 넘어 대구라는 도시를 작심하고 폄훼하는 것”이라고 거듭 유감을 표명했다. 

이 의원이 이어 공식적인 사과를 요청하자 민주당과 친여 성향 의원들이 곳곳에서 술렁였다. 반박을 위해 의사 진행 발언을 요청한 더불어민주당 윤건영 의원은 “당황스러워서 말이 나오지 않는다”며 “오늘의 질문(박정희 동상 등에 관한)은 여당야당을 떠나 국감장에서 충분히 할 수 있는 질문들이다. 그런 질문들이 무슨 정치적으로 편향되고 정치적 중립을 해야 하는 내용이냐”며 발끈했다.

윤 의원은 이어 ”(국감은) 국민들이 걱정하지 않으시도록 국민을 대변해서 기관에게 국민이 궁금한 걸 얻는 게 국정감사“라며 ”지금까지 있었던 심의 내용 중에 국민들이 다 궁금한 것들을 물었던 거 아니냐“고 유감을 표하고 위원장의 철저한 의사진행을 촉구했다. 

이어진 추가 질의에서도 이 논란은 이어졌다. 국민의힘 소속 의원들은 이달희 의원을 거들어 지역 폄훼 오해 소지가 있었다는 점을 강조하고 자중해 줄 것을 요청하는 한편, 여당 의원들은 윤 의원의 발언에 힘을 실었다 특히, 대구 출신이거나 대구와 어떡하든 연이 있는 여당 의원들은 ”여기 출신으로 고향을 떠나 밖에서 그런 소리(꼴통보수 등)를 들으면 얼마나 기분이 안 좋은지 아느냐“며 ”대구가 변화하는 데 더 이상 주저하면 정말 안된다“고 강조했다.
