더불어민주당 이상식 의원은 동대구역 박정희 동상 설치 과정에 대해 언급하며, “대구 시민들이 특정 정치세력에 지나치게 편향된 지지를 보내온 점이 오히려 지역 발전을 저해했다”고 지적했다. 이어 “대구에서 대통령이 다섯 명이나 나왔지만, 발전이 정체된 것은 분명한 사실”이라며 대구 정치의 구조적 한계를 비판했다.

권칠승 의원도 박정희 기념사업 지원 조례 제정과 추진위원회 구성 과정, 동상 설치 목적 등에 의문을 제기했다. 권 의원은 “박정희 대통령의 산업화 성과는 인정하지만, 동상을 꼭 세워야 하는지에 대해서는 동의하기 어렵다”라며 “비공개로 진행된 심의 절차도 다시 검토할 필요가 있다”고 말했다.

이에 국민의힘 이달희 의원은 “대구 시민들의 역사 인식과 존경심을 정치적으로 폄하하는 것은 유감”이라며 “공직자들이 모인 자리에서 정쟁을 이어가는 것은 적절치 않다”고 반박했다.

주호영 의원도 “업적을 남긴 인물의 동상을 세우는 것은 세계적으로도 흔한 일”이라며, “박정희 전 대통령 같은 인물에 대한 기념사업은 오히려 더 확대돼야 한다”고 주장했다.

또한 이광희 의원은 동대구역 광장의 법적 소유권 문제를 지적하며 “기념사업 논의는 관련 법적 근거가 명확히 정리된 이후에 진행돼야 한다”고 말했다.

이날 논쟁은 박정희 기념사업을 바라보는 시각이 단순한 역사적 평가를 넘어, 지역 정치와 시민 인식, 법적 쟁점까지 복합적으로 얽혀 있음을 보여줬다.

Representative Joo Ho-young also argued, "Erecting statues of people with significant achievements is common worldwide," and that "commemorative projects for figures like former President Park Chung-hee should be expanded."

Representative Lee Kwang-hee also pointed out the legal ownership issue of the Dongdaegu Station plaza, stating, "Discussions on commemorative projects should only proceed after the relevant legal basis has been clearly established."

The debate revealed that perspectives on the Park Chung-hee memorial project go beyond simple historical assessments and are complexly intertwined with local politics, public perception, and legal issues.
