17일 민주노총 대구지역본부는 우 의원 사무실 앞에서 기자회견을 열고 “아리셀 유족을 모욕하고, 산업재해의 책임을 노동자에게 떠넘긴 망언에 대해 즉각 사과하고 의원직에서 물러나라”고 강하게 비판했다.

논란은 지난 15일 국회 환경노동위원회 국정감사에서 불거졌다. 우 의원은 “산업재해는 노동자들이 안전 조치를 지키지 않아 발생한다”며 사고 책임을 노동자에게 돌렸고, 23명의 사망자를 낸 아리셀 화재 참사와 관련해서는 “과실치사일 뿐인데 패가망신했다”, “간첩보다 더하다”고 발언했다.

이 같은 발언은 참사 유가족과 시민사회는 물론, 지역 주민들에게까지 큰 분노를 불러일으켰다.

민주노총 대구지역본부는 “현장 안전의 기본도 모르는 무지한 인식”이라며 “노동자의 목숨을 개인의 부주의 탓으로 몰아가는 것은 구조적 문제를 외면한 시대착오적 사고”라고 비판했다.

이어 “안전 조치를 지키지 않은 노동자를 해고해야 한다는 발언은 결국 사업주 책임을 희석시키고, 이윤 중심의 위험한 노동 환경을 정당화하는 것”이라고 지적했다.

진보당 대구시당도 논평을 통해 “아무리 정치가 타락해도 사람이 해서는 안 될 말이 있다”며 “23명의 목숨을 앗아간 참사에서 누가 ‘패가망신’을 운운할 수 있느냐”고 반문했다.

또한 “정작 삶이 무너진 건 가족을 잃은 유족들”이라며 “이들의 고통을 정치적 공격의 소재로 삼는 행태는 인간적 도리마저 저버린 것”이라고 강하게 성토했다.

지역 정치권에서도 자성의 목소리가 나오고 있다. 한 지역 정치인은 “정태옥 전 의원의 ‘이부망천’ 발언 때처럼 대구 정치의 품격이 다시 흔들리고 있다”며 “이번 사안은 단순한 말실수가 아니라, 시민의 생명과 안전을 경시하는 인식의 문제”라고 꼬집었다.

진보당은 “우 의원은 즉시 유가족에게 공개 사과하고 발언을 철회하라”며 “국민의힘 역시 해당 의원의 망언에 대해 공식 사죄하고, 재발 방지책을 내놓아야 한다”고 촉구했다.

또 “참사 유족의 고통을 정쟁의 도구로 삼는다면, 국민의힘은 공당으로서의 자격을 스스로 내던지는 것”이라고 경고했다.

The Daegu branch of the Progressive Party also released a statement, asking, "No matter how corrupt politics, there are things people shouldn't say," and asking, "Who can talk about 'ruining a family' in the wake of a disaster that claimed 23 lives?"

They also strongly condemned the situation, stating, "The families who lost their loved ones are the ones whose lives were truly shattered," and "Using their suffering as a political weapon is a betrayal of even human decency."

Voices of self-reflection are also emerging in local politics. A local politician said, "Just like former lawmaker Jeong Tae-ok's 'Ibu-mangcheon' remark, the dignity of Daegu politics is once again being shaken. This incident is not a simple slip of the tongue, but a problem of disregard for the lives and safety of citizens."

The Progressive Party urged, "Representative Woo should immediately issue a public apology to the bereaved families and retract his remarks." They added, "The People Power Party should also formally apologize for the lawmaker's outrageous remarks and come up with measures to prevent a recurrence."

They also warned, "If the People Power Party uses the suffering of the victims' families as a political tool, it will be throwing away its right to be a public party."
