실제, 권 시장 재임 시절에도 후적지를 개발해 팔아 군공항을 건설하고, 민간 공항의 경우 국비로 건설하는 계획이 속도감 있게 추진되어왔다. 특히, 군공항 건설에 있어서도 사업의 안전한 추진을 위해 국가 기관인 LH를 사업자로 선정해 혹시나 부족한 (재정) 부분이 생기더라도 이를 보장받도록 하는 계획들이 차근히 준비되어왔다. 

여기에 군공항과 달리 민간공항은 이미 법률로서 국가가 건설하도록 되어 있기 때문에 (홍 시장의) 민항 국비 건설 내용은 사실 진부한 내용이다.

이전의 특별법들 안에는 단순한 국비 지원만이 아니라 특례와 예타 면제, 규모 확대 등 신공항 건설의 조속한 추진을 위한 구체적 내용까지 포함되어 있다는 점을 감안하면, 홍 시장의 이날 발언이 ‘알고 이야기하는 것인지, 아직 파악을 하지 못한 것인지’ 듣는 이조차 혼란스럽다는 지적이다.

문제는 대구경북통합신공항이 가덕도 신공항보다 먼저 건설되어야 그 효과를 볼 수 있다는 데 있다. 시간이 생명인 셈이다. 늦어도 내년에는 사업자를 선정해야 하는 이유도 여기에 있다. 그러나, 이제까지 어려운 고비를 잘 넘기면서 차근히 준비해 왔던 공항 건설이 이런저런 연유와 주장들로 시간만 늦추는 변수를만날 경우, 대구경북통합신공항의 건설은 물론 그 효율성을 모두 놓치는 우를 범하고 말 것이라는 우려가 나오고 있다.
