20일 오전 11시 20분, 국민의힘 대구시당에서 기자회견을 개최한 김용판 위원장은 최근 실시한 여론조사 결과를 언급하며 “달서구 주민 다수가 일부 부지를 매각해서라도 신청사 건립 추진을 원하고 있다.”고 말했다.

그러면서 “대구시와 시의회가 신청사 건립에 필요한 설계용역 관련 예산을 조속히 추경에 반영해 통과시킴으로써 대구시민의 불안감을 해소해주길 바란다.”고 목소리를 높였다.

앞서 김용판 위원장은 신청사 부지 매각에 대해 부정적인 입장을 밝혀왔다. 그는 대구시가 2만 7천 평을 매각하고자 하는 계획에 반대하며 1만 평만 매각하자는 대안을 제시하기도 했다.

그러나 이날 김 위원장은 “홍준표 대구시장과도 이야기를 나누었고 지난 14일에 대구 지역 국회의원 12명과 만나 의견을 같이하기로 했다.”고 밝히며 “이에 대해 시의원이나 구의원이 반대하거나 그럴 분위기는 아니다.”라고 강조했다.

그러면서 그는 “지역의 국회의원으로서 절박한 이야기를 너무나도 많이 들었고 여론조사 등을 종합해볼 때 현재 상황에서 다른 대안은 없다.”고 덧붙여 말했다.

이와 함께 김용판 위원장은 권영진 전 대구시장에 대한 비판을 쏟아내기도 했다. 그는 ”치밀한 마스터 플랜에 의해서 움직여야 되는데 그런 것이 지금까지 없다.”고 꼬집으며 “또한 아무리 이재명을 따라한다 하더라도 코로나로 어렵다고 기금을 빼서 마음대로 쓰면 되나?”면서 앞서 권영진 전 시장이 코로나19 지원금 지원을 위해 대구시청 건립기금 등을 이용한 것을 질타했다.

김 위원장은 달서구 주민만을 대상으로 한 여론조사가 아닌 대구 시민 전체의 의견을 들어야 하는 것 아니냐는 지적에 대해서는 “다른 지역은 여기에 관심이 거의 없다.”면서 “다른 지역은 국회의원들도 관심이 적은 마당에 얼마나 의미 있게 의견을 내겠나?”며 반문했다.

그러나 김 위원장의 주장과는 달리 지역 곳곳에서는 “시청은 달서구민이 아닌 대구시민의 것”이라는 비판 또한 이어지고 있어 신청사 건립이 수월하게 진행되지만은 않을 것으로 전망된다.
