그러나 25일 엄창옥 후보가 “공개된 답변은 실무자 개인 의견을 보내는 실수였다”고 밝히며 ‘혐오 차별 방지와 인권의식’ 설문 답변을 “답변하지 않는다.”로 번복했다.

이 같은 엄창옥 후보의 입장 번복으로 인해 논란은 일파만파로 번지고 있다. 대구경북차별금지법제정연대는 “엄창옥 후보의 정정보도에 당혹스러움과 실망을 감출 수 없다. 대구시민과 사회적 소수자에게 사과하라"며 입장문을 발표했다.

무지개인권연대 또한 “학교에서 각자의 정체성과 차이로 인해 고립되거나 차별받지 않도록 하고, 소수자의 권리보장과 인권증진의 책무를 다해야 할 교육감 후보이기에 답변 번복이 더 절망스럽다”고 밝히며 “답변거부는 유권자의 선택권을 가로막고, 차별금지법이 절실한 시민들을 무시하고 거부한 것과 같다.”고 강한 비판을 쏟아냈다.
