지난 주 치료 중인 병원에서 상당수의 암세포가 사라졌다는 반가운 소식을 접한 이 지사는 이날 우려와 달리 이 지사는 오는 10월 경주에서 개최되는 ‘2025년 APEC 정상회의’의 성공개최와 포스트 APEC 특별사업을 건의하고, APEC 최초 문화고위급회담 등 앞으로 열릴 행사에 관심과 시설 및 경관개선 등에 필요한 특별교부세 지원 필요성을 강조했다. 

특히, 이 지사는 조만간 이뤄질 한미 정상회담에 대한 기대감을 전하면서 “APEC 경주에서 우리나라와 미국, 북한의 평화 회담의 개최를 끌어내어 ‘하노이 빅딜’에 버금가는 ‘경주 빅딜’을 만들어야 한다”고 거듭 강조했다. 이 대통령은 이 지사의 제안에 큰 관심을 보이며 평화·번영의 APEC이 되어야 한다는 점에 크게 공감했던 것으로 알려졌다.

이밖에도 이재명 대통령이 강조하고 있는 북극항로 개척과 관련해서도 이 지사는 “거점항으로서 포항 영일만항의 복합항만 개발도 필요하다”고 말하고 “영일만 횡단 고속도로 건설 등을 통해 동해안 산업․물류를 연계해야 한다”고 설명했다.

이 지사는 암 투병 중으로 불편한 몸임에도 불구하고 이날 회의 분위기를 주도했다. 그는 현안 사업을 설명하고 난 뒤 “경북에 대한 대통령의 큰 관심과 지원이 암을 극복하는 큰 선물이 될 것”이라며 웃으며 건의하자, 이 대통령은 “지사님의 암을 낫게 해드려야죠”라며 이 지사가 설명한 현안들에 대하여 적극적인 관심과 지원을 검토하겠다며 화답했다.
