이날 연설회에서 강훈식 후보는 “우리 안의 분열과 갈등은 더욱 더 커지고 있다. 계파와 갈등이 현실이라면 강훈식이 가진 연결의 힘으로 통합을 이뤄내겠다.”며 목소리를 높였다.

그는 “왜 다른 후보를 공격하지 않는지 묻는 사람들이 많다. 이재명은 이래서 밀어내고 박용진은 저래서 쳐내고, 민주당이 도대체 누구와 함께 정치하겠나?”며 “동료를 찍어눌러서 덕본 정치가 민주당의 정치가 아니지 않나?”라고 말했다.

이어 강 후보는 “검찰의 표적이 된 이재명 후보를 외롭지 않게 하겠다. 소신파 박용진 후보를 소외되지 않게 하겠다.”며  "강훈식은 함께 싸우고, 더 넓게 포용하겠다"는 약속을 전했다.

아울러 그는 “인물도, 지지기반도, 노선도 뻔한 민주당이라면 민주당은 낡은 정당"이라고 설명하며 ”저는 지역의 경계를 허물고 이념과 관행의 금기를 깨는 민주당, 새로운 가능성이 꿈틀대는 민주당, 젊은 수권정당을 만들겠다.”고 포부를 밝혔다.
