14일 임 의원은 “국내 최초의 내륙형 소형 원자력 발전소가 들어설 부지로 대구경북 신공항 인근에 건립될 군위첨단산업단지가 후보지로 언급되고 있다”며 “문제는 경제성과 안전성이 실증되지 않은 SMR의 군위 설치가 지역사회 합의 없이 추진되고 있다는 점"이라고 지적했다.

그는 “이번에 건설될 SMR은 680MW 규모로 170MW의 원자로 4기가 한 부지에 들어선다”며 “소형 원자로라고 하기에는 고리 1호기(587MW) 규모보다 크다”고 설명했다.

그는 “지방소멸 위기에 내몰린 지역 주민들은 울며 겨자 먹는 심정으로 기피시설이라도 유치해 지역에 변화를 만들고 싶어한다”며 “이런 주민들의 눈물을 자기 정치적 성과내기에 악용하는 정치는 용납될 수 없다”고 말했다.
